Etymology. From the root √ud (to rise up, flow out) + the nominal suffix -aka. The sense 'water' is naturally derived from the image of rising or flowing liquid; compare Sanskrit udaka and the cognate English 'udal' (a form of Orkney land tenure involving water rights). The prefix ud- (up, out) appears in ud-gacchati 'rises' and ud-dharati 'lifts', preserving the concrete sense of upward motion and emergence.
