Analysis. upa- (up close to, near) + √dhā (place, put): 'placing near', the act of taking something as one's own, hence clinging and the conditions appropriated as self.
Etymology. upa- (prefix meaning 'near, up close to'; cognate with Greek hypo-, Latin sub-, English up) + √dhā (to place, put; cognate with Latin facere, Greek tithenai, English do). The spatial image of 'placing near oneself' became the psychological sense of 'taking as mine', and in doctrine, the five aggregates or other phenomena appropriated as 'I' and 'mine'.
