Analysis. A compound of upādhi (attachment, fuel for becoming) + saṅkhaya (destruction, cessation). Upādhi itself is upa- + ādhi (taking up close, grasping), so the whole means the radical cessation of the substrates that fuel rebirth and suffering.

Etymology. Upādhi < upa- (near, up close, approach) + ādhi (taking), the concrete image of fuel drawn up close to a flame; saṅkhaya < sam- + √khay (together + to wear away, crumble), the Sanskrit root cognate with English "chaos" and Greek khao- (to gape, yawn open — the void left when things crumble). The doctrine of cessation of the fuel of becoming.
