pr 3rd pl of upapajjati (verb)
Analysis. upa- (up close to, near) + pajjati (becomes, goes forth): literally 'goes forth near/into', used in Buddhist contexts of rebirth into a particular realm or condition, and more broadly of arising or occurring.
Etymology. upa- (near, alongside; cognate with Greek hypo-, Latin sub-, English up) + pajjati from √pad (to go, proceed; cognate with Latin pandere 'to spread', and Sanskrit padati 'goes'). The prefix upa- lends the sense of approach or entry: the spatial image of moving up close to a destination becomes the abstract sense of taking birth or arising in a new condition.
