Etymology. ud + √pad. The prefix ud- (up, out) combines with the root √pad (to go, step; cognate with Latin pes 'foot', English foot) to form uppajjati 'springs up, arises'. The past participle uppanna shows the sense of 'having stepped forth' or 'come up into being'—motion that breaks the surface.
