Etymology. vacanīya is a future passive participle (gerundive) formed from √vac (Skt. √vac) meaning 'to speak, say'. The suffix -īya creates the sense 'fit to be, worthy of being'. The root √vac is cognate with Latin vocare 'to call' and English voice, all descending from the Indo-European root *wek- 'to speak'.
