masc nom sg of vaccha (noun)
Etymology. Related to Sanskrit vatsa, from Indo-European *wet- (year, age): the creature of a particular year or age. Cognate with English "wether" (castrated ram) and Latin "vetus" (old), which share the sense of age-marking. The concrete notion of "creature of a season/year" yields both the young animal and, by extension, any young growth such as a plant.
