Etymology. The name Vajji (Sanskrit Vṛji) is of uncertain origin. It may derive from a root meaning 'to turn' or 'to bend' (related to Sanskrit vrajati 'turns, goes'), referring to the winding course of the Ganges or the confederation's crooked borders. The suffix -ī marks it as a feminine singular noun (the country as a collective), which becomes masculine in the plural for the people who inhabit it. No clear Indo-European cognates are established.
