masc nom sg of vedanākkhandha (noun)
Analysis. vedanā (feeling, sensation from √vid
Etymology. Compound of vedanā (sensation, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- 'to see', source of English 'wit', Latin 'vidēre', Sanskrit 'vid-') and kkhandha (aggregate, heap, from √khan- 'to dig', hence 'heap' of material). In Buddhist doctrine, vedanā denotes the second of the five aggregates (pañcakkhandhā), the dimension of sensory affect (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral) that arises with sense contact; it is the substrate of craving (taṇhā) and thus central to suffering (dukkha). The compound is a standard term of the Abhidhamma and Suttapiṭaka.
