Etymology. vi- (apart, asunder) + mutti (from √muc, to release, let go). The prefix vi- adds the sense of complete or thorough liberation. √muc is cognate with Latin mutus (mute, unable to speak) in the sense of being loosened or freed from constraint, though the Pali sense is primary. The compound crystallizes the central Buddhist notion of liberation as a breaking-apart of fetters.
