Analysis. vi- (apart) + rāga (passion, desire): the pulling-apart or dissolution of passion.

Etymology. From vi- (asunder, apart—the prefix that marks separation and clarity) + rāga (passion, colour, from √rañj 'to be coloured, dyed'). The root rāga is cognate with Latin regnare and Sanskrit rājati 'shines, rules', but in Pali rāga is passion—desire as the coloring or dyeing of the mind. Virāga is thus the un-dyeing, the clearing away of that coloring: dispassion in the technical sense of the Four Noble Truths.
