accusative singular masculine of vuṭṭhāna (noun)
Analysis. ud + √sthā, "out and up + stand": the concrete image of standing up and rising out of a lying or seated position, hence exertion and active effort.
Etymology. From ud- (up, out) + √sthā (stand; cognate with English stand, Latin stāre). The prefix ud- reverses downward motion, so ud + sthā yields "standing up, rising out." Compare Sanskrit utthāna and Pali uppilāpana (arising).
