Built from

Etymology. From the root √vut (or a variant of √vas, to dwell, settle), with the past participle suffix -ita. The prefix ud- (up, out) is present in the root itself: ud + √vat > vuṭṭha, literally 'stood up and out'. Cognates: English 'wad' (a lump standing up), German 'Watt' (a raised embankment). The concrete imagery of uprightness carries through to emergence and recovery: standing up from a lying or fallen position, hence rising from any state of depression, illness, or confinement.
