- fulfilled; completed; finished; perfected; epithet of an arahant; lit. having lived quality
- qualified; competent; fulfilled one's training; lit. lived
Built from
- vu- — prefix · turn back, back
The u-grade of vi- (apart) used here as an intensive marker of completion; the sense 'back' and completion cohere.
- sit — root · sit, dwell, live
From √vas 'dwell, live' (Sanskrit vasati, English 'was', German 'wesen'); the concrete image of settling and remaining underlies the sense of spending time.
- -a — ending · past participle
Marks the word as a completed action; 'lived' rather than 'living'.
- -vant — ending · possessing, agent
Adjective-forming suffix meaning 'one who possesses' or 'one who has'; here 'one who has lived (the training to completion)'.
Etymology. From √vas 'dwell, live' (Sanskrit vasati, cognate with English 'was', German 'wesen'). The past participle vusita 'lived' combines with the agent suffix -vant 'possessing' to mean 'one who has lived (the holy life) to completion'. In Pali usage, vusitavā describes an arahant who has finished the path and exhausted all defilements.
