by one skilled in what should be done and the goalKaraṇīyamatthakusalena,
that whichYanta peacefulsantaṁ statepadaṁ having fully understoodabhisamecca;

easy to speak toSūvaco and may they becassa gentlemudu humbleanatimānī.

Those who are skilled in the meaning of scripture should practice as follows to realize the state of peace. Let them be capable and upright, very upright, easy to speak to, gentle and humble;

together·contentSantussako andca unburdensomesubharo andca,
little·dutyAppakicco andca light·livingsallahukavutti;
calmed·facultiesSantindriyo andca alertnipako andca,
little·prideAppagabbho not fawning on familieskulesvananugiddho.

content and unburdensome, unbusied, living lightly, alert, with senses calmed, courteous, not fawning on families.

notNa andca slight·dokhuddamācare anythingkiñci,
by whichYena wiseviññū otherspare would blameupavadeyyuṁ;
happySukhino indeedva safekhemino may they behontu,
all·beingSabbasattā may they bebhavantu happysukhitattā.

Let them not do the slightest thing that others who are wise would blame. May they be happy and safe! May all beings be happy!

whicheverYe whateverkeci breath·becomepāṇabhūtatthi,
frailTasā or firmthāvarā forest·withoutvanavasesā;
longDīghā or whichye orva largemahantā,
mediumMajjhimā smallrassakā tiny or roundaṇukathūlā.

Whatever living creatures there are with not a one left out— frail or firm, long or large, medium, small, tiny or round,

seenDiṭṭhā or whoye orva not·seeadiṭṭhā,
whoYe orva fardūre they dwellvasanti not·faravidūre;
those who have been bornBhūtā orva with·becomesambhavesī orva,
all·beingSabbasattā may they bebhavantu happysukhitattā.

seen or unseen, living far or near, those who have been born and those about to be born— may all beings be happy!

notNa oneparo anotherparaṁ should deceivenikubbetha,
not·over·thinkNātimaññetha anywherekatthaci notna anyonekañci;
through provocationByārosanā aggrieved perceptionpaṭighasañña,
not·each otherNāññamaññassa should wish paindukkhamiccheyya.

Let none deceive another, nor look down on anyone anywhere. Though provoked or aggrieved, let them not wish pain on each other.

a motherMātā asyathā her ownniyaṁ childputtam
with her lifeĀyusā one·child + protectekaputtamanurakkhe;
thus + tooEvampi all + creaturessabbabhūtesu,
a heartMānasaṁ unfoldbhāvaye boundlessaparimāṇaṁ.

Even as a mother would protect with her life her child, her only child, so too for all creatures unfold a boundless heart.

and loveMettañca whole·worldsabbalokasmi,
heartMānasaṁ unfoldbhāvaye not·measureaparimāṇaṁ;
aboveUddhaṁ belowadho andca and all roundtiriyañca,
not·constrictedAsambādhaṁ not·enmity·not·foeaveramasapattaṁ.

With love for the whole world, unfold a boundless heart: above, below, all round, unconstricted, without enmity or foe.

standingTiṭṭhaṁ walkingcaraṁ sittingnisinno orva,
lying downSayāno while yet unwearyyāvatāssa unwearyvitamiddho;
thisEtaṁ mindfulnesssatiṁ should keepadhiṭṭheyya,
divine + thisBrahmametaṁ they say, is a meditation in this lifevihāramidhamāhu.

When standing, walking, sitting, or lying down while yet unweary, keep this ever in mind; for this, they say, is a divine meditation in this life.

view·andDiṭṭhiñca not having gone toanupaggamma,
virtuousSīlavā with insightdassanena accomplishedsampanno;
in sensual pleasuresKāmesu dispelledvinaya desiregedhaṁ,
notNa indeedhi to a womb againjātuggabbhaseyya they returnpunaretīti.

Avoiding harmful views, virtuous, accomplished in insight, with desire for sensual pleasures dispelled, they never return to a womb again.
