do you know“Jānāsi butpana youtvaṁ, mendicantbhikkhu, thattaṁ goddevaputtan”ti?
not“Na indeedkho Iahaṁ, sirbhante, I knowjānāmi thattaṁ goddevaputtan”ti.
Candana“Candano namednāma heso, mendicantbhikkhu, godlingdevaputto.
CandanaCandano, mendicantbhikkhu, godlingdevaputto attentionaṭṭhiṁ having madekatvā having applied the mindmanasikatvā wholeheartedlysabbacetasā having concentratedsamannāharitvā actively listeningohitasoto to the teachingdhammaṁ listenssuṇāti.
thereforeTena thenhi, mendicantbhikkhu, listensuṇāhi, wellsādhukaṁ apply your mindmanasi dokarohi; I will speakbhāsissāmī”ti.
yes“Evaṁ, sirbhante”ti indeedkho venerableāyasmā Lomasakaṅgiyalomasakaṅgiyo to the Buddhabhagavato repliedpaccassosi.
the BuddhaBhagavā said thisetadavoca:

the past“Atītaṁ one should not run back tonānvāgameyya,
one should not anticipatenappaṭikaṅkhe the futureanāgataṁ;
what is pastYadatītaṁ left behindpahīnaṁ thattaṁ,
and not arrivedappattañca the futureanāgataṁ.
and any presentPaccuppannañca whichyo phenomenondhammaṁ,
theretattha theretattha clearly discernsvipassati;
unfalteringAsaṁhīraṁ unshakableasaṅkuppaṁ,
thattaṁ having knownvidvā one should fostermanubrūhaye.
today indeedAjjeva the work, the keen effortkiccamātappaṁ,
whoko may knowjaññā deathmaraṇaṁ tomorrowsuve;
notNa indeedhi for usno a bargainsaṅgaraṁ with thattena,
with the mighty-hordedmahāsenena with deathmaccunā.
one who dwells thusEvaṁvihāriṁ keenly meditatingātāpiṁ,
tireless all night and dayahorattamatanditaṁ;
that oneTaṁ indeedve is one who has one fine nightbhaddekarattoti,
peacefulsanto declaresācikkhate sagemuni.

and the unattainedappattañca futureanāgataṁ.
and the presentPaccuppannañca whoeveryo dhammadhammaṁ,
theretattha theretattha sees clearlyvipassati;
unshakableAsaṁhīraṁ unwaveringasaṅkuppaṁ,
thattaṁ the wise onevidvā should cultivatemanubrūhaye.
today indeedAjjeva the duty of ardorkiccamātappaṁ,
whoko knowsjaññā deathmaraṇaṁ tomorrowsuve;
notNa indeedhi for usno trucesaṅgaraṁ with himtena,
with the great armymahāsenena of deathmaccunā.
one who dwells thusEvaṁvihāriṁ ardentātāpiṁ,
tireless day and nightahorattamatanditaṁ;
himTaṁ indeedve one fine nightbhaddekarattoti,
the peaceful onesanto declaresācikkhate the sagemunī”ti.
this he saidIdamavoca the Blessed Onebhagavā.
satisfiedAttamano Venerableāyasmā Lomasakaṅgiyalomasakaṅgiyo of the Blessed Onebhagavato speechbhāsitaṁ approvedabhinandīti.
LomasakaṅgiyabhaddekarattasuttaLomasakaṅgiyabhaddekarattasuttaṁ finishedniṭṭhitaṁ fourthcatutthaṁ.
