thusEvaṁ because of principled and moral conductdhammacariyāsamacariyāhetu indeedkho, householdersgahapatayo, thus in this world someevam’idhekacce sentient beingssattā of the bodykāyassa by breaking upbhedā afterparaṁ deathmaraṇā in a good placesugatiṁ a heavenly realmsaggaṁ worldlokaṁ are rebornupapajjanti.

This is how principled and moral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

oh‘aho would that Ivatāhaṁ of the bodykāyassa breaking upbhedā afterparaṁ deathmaraṇā in the company of well-to-do aristocratskhattiyamahāsālānaṁ companysahabyataṁ I would be rebornupapajjeyyan’ti;
it is possibleṭhānaṁ indeedkho and thispanetaṁ is foundvijjati, thatyaṁ theyso of the bodykāyassa breaking upbhedā afterparaṁ deathmaraṇā in the company of well-to-do aristocratskhattiyamahāsālānaṁ companysahabyataṁ might be rebornupapajjeyya.

thusTathā becausehi theyso of principled conductdhammacārī of moral conductsamacārī.

Someone of principled and moral conduct might wish: ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats!’ It’s possible that this might happen. Why is that? Because they have principled and moral conduct.

the luminous gods … the gods of limited luminosity … the gods of limitless luminosity … the gods of sublime luminosity … the gods of limited beauty … the gods of limitless beauty … the gods of universal beauty … the gods of abundant fruit … the gods of Aviha … the gods of Atappa … the gods fair to see … the fair seeing gods … the gods of Akaniṭṭha … the gods of the dimension of infinite space … the gods of the dimension of infinite consciousness … the gods of the dimension of nothingness … the gods of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.’

the possibilityṭhānaṁ indeedkho thispanetaṁ existsvijjati, thatyaṁ theyso of the bodykāyassa with the breakupbhedā afterparaṁ deathmaraṇā of the gods of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perceptionnevasaññānāsaññāyatanūpagānaṁ of the godsdevānaṁ companionshipsahabyataṁ might be rebornupapajjeyya.

It’s possible that this might happen. Why is that? Because they have principled and moral conduct.

oh‘aho if only Ivatāhaṁ of defilementsāsavānaṁ due to the endingkhayā undefiledanāsavaṁ freedom of heartcetovimuttiṁ freedom by wisdompaññāvimuttiṁ in this very lifediṭṭheva in this very lifedhamme with my own insightsayaṁ with my own insightabhiññā having realizedsacchikatvā having attainedupasampajja might livevihareyyan’ti;
it is possibleṭhānaṁ indeedkho thispanetaṁ is foundvijjati, thatyaṁ heso of defilementsāsavānaṁ due to the endingkhayā undefiledanāsavaṁ freedom of heartcetovimuttiṁ freedom by wisdompaññāvimuttiṁ in this very lifediṭṭheva in this very lifedhamme with my own insightsayaṁ with my own insightabhiññā having realizedsacchikatvā having attainedupasampajja might livevihareyya.

soTathā becausehi heso of principled conductdhammacārī and moral conductsamacārī”ti.

Someone of principled and moral conduct might wish: ‘If only I might realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom, and live having realized it with my own insight in this very life due to the ending of defilements.’ It’s possible that this might happen. Why is that? Because they have principled and moral conduct.”

thusEvaṁ when saidvutte, of Sālāsāleyyakā brahmin householdersbrāhmaṇagahapatikā to the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ said thisetadavocuṁ:
excellent“abhikkantaṁ, worthybho Gotamagotama, excellentabhikkantaṁ, worthybho Gotamagotama.
just asSeyyathāpi, worthybho Gotamagotama, overturnednikkujjitaṁ or might set uprightukkujjeyya, hiddenpaṭicchannaṁ or might revealvivareyya, to the lostmūḷhassa or the pathmaggaṁ might point outācikkheyya, in darknessandhakāre or an oil lamptelapajjotaṁ might holddhāreyya: those with eyes‘cakkhumanto formsrūpāni will seedakkhantī’ti; just soevamevaṁ by the worthybhotā Gotamagotamena in many waysanekapariyāyena the Dhammadhammo has been made clearpakāsito.
weEte wemayaṁ to the worthybhavantaṁ Gotamagotamaṁ as refugesaraṇaṁ we gogacchāma and to the Dhammadhammañca and to the Bhikkhu Saṅghabhikkhusaṅghañca.
as lay followersUpāsake usno the worthybhavaṁ Gotamagotamo may rememberdhāretu from this dayajjatagge gone with lifepāṇupete gone for refugesaraṇaṁ gonegate”ti.
the Sutta of SālāSāleyyakasuttaṁ is finishedniṭṭhitaṁ the firstpaṭhamaṁ.

When he had spoken, the brahmins and householders of Sālā said to the Buddha, “Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, worthy Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways. We go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saṅgha. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember us as lay followers who have gone for refuge for life.”
