thusEvaṁ when saidvutte, Subhasubho the brahmin studentmāṇavo Todeyya's sontodeyyaputto to the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ said thisetadavoca:
excellent“abhikkantaṁ, worthybho Gotamagotama, excellentabhikkantaṁ, worthybho Gotamagotama.
just asSeyyathāpi, worthybho Gotamagotama, overturnednikkujjitaṁ orvā would rightukkujjeyya, hiddenpaṭicchannaṁ orvā would revealvivareyya, to one lostmūḷhassa orvā the pathmaggaṁ would point outācikkheyya, in the darkandhakāre orvā an oil lamptelapajjotaṁ would holddhāreyya: those with eyes‘cakkhumanto formsrūpāni will seedakkhantī’ti; just soevamevaṁ by worthybhotā Gotamagotamena in many waysanekapariyāyena the teachingdhammo made clearpakāsito.
this IEsāhaṁ to the worthybhavantaṁ Gotamagotamaṁ as refugesaraṇaṁ I gogacchāmi and to the teachingdhammañca and to the mendicant Saṅghabhikkhusaṅghañca.
as a lay followerUpāsakaṁ memaṁ worthybhavaṁ Gotamagotamo may rememberdhāretu from this day forthajjatagge for lifepāṇupetaṁ to refugesaraṇaṁ gonegataṁ.
wellHanda andca nowdāni wemayaṁ, worthybho Gotamagotama, we gogacchāma;
having many dutiesbahukiccā wemayaṁ having much to dobahukaraṇīyā”ti.

whatever now“Yassadāni youtvaṁ, studentmāṇava, timekālaṁ you thinkmaññasī”ti.
thenAtha indeedkho Subhasubho studentmāṇavo Todeyya's sontodeyyaputto of the Blessed Onebhagavato speechbhāsitaṁ having rejoiced inabhinanditvā having approvedanumoditvā from the seatuṭṭhāyāsanā the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ having bowedabhivādetvā clockwisepadakkhiṇaṁ having donekatvā he departedpakkāmi.

by thatTena indeedkho nowpana at the timesamayena Jānussoṇijāṇussoṇi the brahminbrāhmaṇo in an all-whitesabbasetena with a chariot drawn by maresvaḷavābhirathena from Sāvatthīsāvatthiyā drove outniyyāti by daydivā of the day.divassa.
he sawAddasā indeedkho Jānussoṇijāṇussoṇi the brahminbrāhmaṇo Subhasubhaṁ the studentmāṇavaṁ Todeyyaputtatodeyyaputtaṁ from a distance indeeddūratova coming.āgacchantaṁ.
having seenDisvāna Subhasubhaṁ the studentmāṇavaṁ Todeyyaputtatodeyyaputtaṁ said this:etadavoca:
so“handa from wherekuto nownu worthybhavaṁ Bhāradvājabhāradvājo are you comingāgacchati by daydivā in the middle of the day?"divassā”ti?
from here“Ito just nowhi indeedkho I,ahaṁ, good fellow,bho, I have comeāgacchāmi of the asceticsamaṇassa Gotamagotamassa from the presence."santikā”ti.
that“Taṁ whatkiṁ do you think,maññasi, worthybhavaṁ Bhāradvājabhāradvājo of the asceticsamaṇassa Gotamagotamassa the lucidity of wisdompaññāveyyattiyaṁ astutepaṇḍito do you think?"maññeti”?
who“Ko and I,cāhaṁ, good fellow,bho, whoko andca of the asceticsamaṇassa Gotamagotamassa the lucidity of wisdompaññāveyyattiyaṁ will I know?jānissāmi?
he tooSopi surely of hisnūnassa of the same kind indeedtādisova whoyo of the asceticsamaṇassa Gotamagotamassa the lucidity of wisdompaññāveyyattiyaṁ would know."jāneyyā”ti.
with high“Uḷārāya indeedkhalu worthybhavaṁ Bhāradvājabhāradvājo the asceticsamaṇaṁ Gotamagotamaṁ with praisepasaṁsāya praises."pasaṁsatī”ti.
who“Ko and I,cāhaṁ, good fellow,bho, whoko andca the asceticsamaṇaṁ Gotamagotamaṁ will I praise?pasaṁsissāmi?
by the praised as praised indeedPasatthapasatthova heso worthybhavaṁ Gotamagotamo the bestseṭṭho of gods and humans.devamanussānaṁ.

whichYe thesecime, sirbho, brahminsbrāhmaṇā fivepañca thingsdhamme prescribepaññapenti of meritpuññassa for makingkiriyāya skillfulkusalassa for succeeding inārādhanāya;
of the mindcittassete asceticsamaṇo Gotamagotamo prerequisitesparikkhāre he saysvadeti—
that isyadidaṁ mindcittaṁ free of enmityaveraṁ free of ill willabyābajjhaṁ of thattassa for developingbhāvanāyā”ti.

thusEvaṁ when spokenvutte, Jānussoṇijāṇussoṇi brahminbrāhmaṇo all-whitesabbasetā from the chariot drawn by maresvaḷavābhirathā having descendedorohitvā over one shoulderekaṁsaṁ upper robeuttarāsaṅgaṁ having arrangedkaritvā whereyena the Blessed Onebhagavā cupped palms toward himtenañjaliṁ having raisedpaṇāmetvā heartfelt sentimentudānaṁ expressedudānesi:
lucky“lābhā of the kingrañño Pasenadipasenadissa of Kosalakosalassa, very fortunatesuladdhalābhā of the kingrañño Pasenadipasenadissa of Kosalakosalassa
whoseyassa in the realmvijite the Realized Onetathāgato is livingviharati perfected onearahaṁ fully awakened Buddhasammāsambuddho”ti.
