āhuneyya

masc nom sg of āhuneyya (adj)

  1. worthy of offerings; lit. to be offered to

Built from

Analysis. ā + √hu, "toward" + "offer" (sacrificial/ritual sense); hence "to be offered to, worthy of receiving offerings"

Etymology. ā (reversal prefix) + √hu (offer, sacrifice; cognate with Sanskrit √hu, Greek khyein "pour"). The prefix ā reverses the intransitive sense of √hu to create a passive-potential: what fire or priest moves toward (offers), becomes what one should move toward with offerings.
