nominative singular neuter of ākāsānañcāyatana (noun); optionally analyzed as a contraction/compound form in the technical doctrinal register
Analysis. ākāsa (space) + anañca (infinite, boundless) + āyatana (sphere, base, realm). In canonical Pali this is often written as two words (ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ or ākāsa-anañcāyatana) but functions as a single doctrinal term. The contraction shows haplology: ākāsa + anañcāyatana > ākāsānañcāyatana, with elision of the redundant -a- at the morpheme boundary.
Etymology. ākāsa (< *ā-kāś-, "space, ether") + anañca (a + nañca, "not limited/bounded") + āyatana (ā + √tan, "stretched out place, base, realm"). The compound names the first of four formless meditative attainments (arūpajjhāna), where consciousness extends infinitely through space; in post-canonical Abhidhamma systematics, each becomes a distinct āyatana. Cognate with Sanskrit ākāśa.
