masc nom sg of aṭṭhama (ordin); masc nom sg of aṭṭhama (noun)
Etymology. From Indo-European *oḱtō(u) 'eight', cognate with Sanskrit aṣṭa, Greek oktṓ, Latin octō, English eight, German acht. The ordinal suffix -ma (like English -th in eighth) forms ordinals from cardinal numbers. The doubling of ṭ is a regular phonetic development in Pali from earlier *aṣṭama.
