Etymology. abhi- (toward and over, bearing down) + √jñā (to know). The prefix abhi- conveys facing something with full attention and bearing down upon it; jñā is the Indo-European root for knowing (*gn-), cognate with English know, Latin nōscere, Greek gnōsis. Together, abhijānāti expresses knowledge that comes from direct experience—knowing that bears down on its object, pressing intimately into it.
