Built from

Analysis. acci + gamā, where acci is the prefix ati- 'beyond, over' with the vowel assimilated in Pali sandhi (ati- + a- > acci-), and gamā is the 3rd sg imperfect of gacchati 'go'. Literally 'went beyond'.

Etymology. The root is √gam 'to go', cognate with Latin venio 'come' and English come. The prefix ati- means 'over, beyond, exceeding', from the same Indo-European root as Greek eti 'still, besides'. The compound ati-gam- preserves the spatial sense: to go beyond or past a boundary.
