Etymology. From Proto-Indo-European *h₂enǵ- 'narrow, tight, constricted', also reflected in Sanskrit aṅga 'limb' and possibly Latin angustus 'narrow'. The sense develops from 'pointed' or 'sharp' (the narrow tip) to 'foremost, highest' — what stands out or protrudes is supreme. No clear cognates in English, but compare the image of a mountain's sharp peak.
