masc instr sg of avera (adj); nt instr sg of avera (adj); nt instr sg of avera (noun)
Etymology. a- (prefix, 'not, without') + vera (hatred, from √vṛ 'to turn, twist'); cognate with Latin verus 'true' in its root sense of 'turning/twisting toward', but vera in Pali denotes the twisted, hostile turning-away of hate. The prefix a- strips away this negativity, leaving the positive state of friendliness.
