Built from
- bhā — root · speak, shine
The root √bhās- carries both meanings: to speak (utter aloud) and to shine (radiate light). The overlap reflects the primitive image of speech as something bright and visible.
- s — stem · present stem
The -s- is part of the thematic present stem, forming bhāsa- as the base for conjugation.
- e — ending · optative marker
The -e- marks the optative mood, expressing what should or might happen.
- yya — ending · 3rd singular optative
The -yya ending completes the 3rd person singular optative inflection, here 'he/she/it should speak'.
Etymology. Root √bhās- 'to speak, shine' is cognate with Sanskrit bhāsate 'shines, appears' and Lithuanian baisus 'terrible' (originally 'shining, visible'). The root reflects Indo-European *bheh₂s- 'to shine, be bright', with the sense of speech developing from the visibility of utterance. English 'base' (foundation, what stands visible) shares the same root-family through Latin.
