pr 1st sg of bhuñjati (verb); imp 1st sg of bhuñjati (verb)
Etymology. From the root √bhuj, related to Sanskrit bhuj- and the Indo-European root *bheug- "to bend, curve"; the underlying image is of eating as a bending or partaking. Cognate with Greek phugē "flight" in a different semantic branch, and distantly with English "bow" through the idea of bending. The verb's broadening to "enjoy" and "consume" reflects Pali's doctrinal emphasis on clinging (upādāna) to sensory pleasures.
