opt 3rd sg of dhāreti (verb)
Etymology. √dhṛ 'to hold, bear' (Sanskrit dhṛnoti, dhārayati; English 'dare' as 'venture to hold/grasp'; Latin durus 'hard, steadfast'; Greek tharsein 'to be bold', thronos 'seat/throne' as 'something held firm'). The sense 'carry' is concrete; 'hold in mind' and 'remember' develop from the metaphor of mental holding; 'owe' preserves the literal sense of 'bearing' a burden.
