Etymology. From the Indo-European root *dhē- (to place, put, set), cognate with Sanskrit dharma, Greek thema (that which is placed), and English do. The sense evolved from concrete 'placing' to 'what is placed in order' (law, custom) to 'nature' or 'essential character' (what one is by nature placed into). In Buddhist usage, dhamma denotes both the Buddha's teaching (set forth) and the phenomena it describes — the things (mental and physical) that constitute reality.
