Etymology. From √div (div-, dīv-, dyau-), 'to shine, be bright'; closely related to Sanskrit divya and cognate with English deity, Latin deus, Greek Zeus, and Dyaus (Vedic sky-god). The root traces to Proto-Indo-European *dyew- (bright sky, day), which also appears in Latin dies 'day'. The adjective form is built on the extended stem div- to mean 'of or pertaining to the bright heavens'.
