Etymology. From the root √kas 'to drag, to pull'; the concrete image is of the plough dragged through earth. Cognate with Latin caesus 'cut' (from *kad-), Greek kázō 'split', and English hew — all from the Indo-European root *ked- meaning 'to strike, cut, drag'. The semantic shift from 'dragging' to 'ploughing' and thence to 'farming' reflects the tool and the labour.
