pr 3rd pl of nibbāti (verb)
Etymology. nis + √vā (blow). The prefix nis- means 'out of, away from' (cognate Sanskrit nis, English nether); √vā means 'blow' or 'fan' (cognate Sanskrit vāti, Latin ventus 'wind', English wind). Literally 'blows out'; applied to fire going out, and metaphorically to mental defilements being completely extinguished on the path to nirvana (nibbāna, the 'blown-out' state).
