genitive plural masculine of orambhāgiya (adjective)
Analysis. orambhāgiya is a compound: oram "lower, this-side" + bhāgiya "share, portion, belonging to". Thus orambhāgiya means "of the lower realm" or "pertaining to the lower fetters". In the canon, the pañca orambhāgiyāni saññojanāni are the five lower fetters (self-identity view, doubt, wrong conduct, sensual desire, ill-will) that bind practitioners to rebirth in the sense-realm (kāmadhātu).
Etymology. oram is the nominative/accusative of the comparative ora, from a root meaning "this-side" or "near" (contrast param "that-side, beyond"). bhāgiya derives from bhāga "share, portion" (cognate with Latin frangere through the root bhag "break into shares"). The compound sense solidified in the Abhidhamma to denote the psychological fetters operative at the level of sensual desire.
