  1. urbane; polite; polished; refined; lit. belonging to the city

Built from

Etymology. From pura 'city' (cognate with Sanskrit pura, Greek polis 'city-state', Latin polis in compounds; ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *per- 'to go through, traverse', the idea being a place where people traverse and gather). The suffix -ī forms adjectives meaning 'belonging to' or 'of the nature of', hence porī 'of or belonging to the city', whence 'civilized, refined'.
