Etymology. From √ram 'to delight, be pleased' (Sanskrit ramati). The root is likely cognate with Latin rapere 'to seize, snatch' in its original sense of 'to grasp eagerly'; the emotional sense 'to take pleasure' developed from the concrete image of grasping. The past participle rata 'delighted' is used substantively in Buddhist texts for one who delights in or is devoted to the dhamma.
