  1. name of a city; capital of Kosala

Etymology. The name Sāvatthī (Sanskrit Śrāvastī) is of uncertain origin. It may derive from śravas- 'fame, renown' (cognate with English 'shear' in the sense of 'cut out, distinguish'), though folk etymologies in the commentarial tradition connect it to the city's founder or early king. The form shows no productive Pali morphology.
