Etymology. From the root saṁ + √gam (to go together). The concrete image is of people coming together into one place—hence a gathering or assembly. Sanskrit saṅgha, Greek synagōgē (synagogue), and Latin congregāre all descend from the same Indo-European root *gʰem- (to come together). In the Buddhist tradition, saṅgha is one of the Tiratana (Three Jewels), the community of ordained practitioners (bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs) who preserve and transmit the Dhamma.
