Etymology. From so- (pronoun stem, 'that') + rata (past participle of √ram 'to delight, enjoy, be satisfied'). The compound thus means 'delighted in that' or 'pleased with', hence figuratively 'well-disposed, gentle'. The root √ram is cognate with Latin rāmus 'branch' and Sanskrit ramati 'delights'; the semantic shift from 'branch' to 'delight' is obscure, but both may preserve an Indo-European root *rem- related to leisure or repose.
