Etymology. From Proto-Indo-European *wed- 'to speak', cognate with Latin vādēs 'pledge' and possibly English word. The root appears in Sanskrit vadati with the same meaning. In Pali compounds and derivatives, vad- carries the concrete sense of 'making sound' or 'uttering', which extends to 'speaking, saying, arguing, advising'.
