masc nom sg of vara (adj); masc nom sg of vara (noun)
Etymology. From √vṛ 'choose, pick out', whence vrati 'chooses' and Latin velle 'wish' (via *wel-), English will; the concrete image is selecting one thing from many, hence 'best' and 'choice', and by extension 'wish' (what one chooses for oneself). Cognate with Sanskrit vara, Greek hairesis 'choice'.
