Etymology. vi- (apart, asunder) + mutti (from √muc, to release, set free). The prefix vi- gives the sense of complete freedom or setting-apart from bondage. √muc is cognate with English "muck" (to remove, clean out) and Latin "mucus" in the sense of removing obstruction; more directly, Sanskrit mucyate means "is released." Vimutti is a central term in Buddhist doctrine for liberation from saṁsāra.
