oneekaṁ timesamayaṁ the Blessed Onebhagavā among the Kuruskurūsu was stayingviharati Kammāsadammakammāsadhammaṁ namednāma of the Kuruskurūnaṁ a townnigamo, of the Bhāradvāja clanbhāradvājagottassa of a brahminbrāhmaṇassa in the fire chamberagyāgāre on a grass mattiṇasanthārake.

thenAtha indeedkho Māgaṇḍiyamāgaṇḍiyo wandererparibbājako walking for exercisejaṅghāvihāraṁ walking back and forthanucaṅkamamāno wandering aboutanuvicaramāno whereyena of the Bhāradvāja clanbhāradvājagottassa of the brahminbrāhmaṇassa fire chamberagyāgāraṁ he approachedtenupasaṅkami.

thisTaṁ indeedkho nowpana the worthybhavantaṁ Gotamagotamaṁ thusevaṁ goodkalyāṇo reputationkittisaddo has gone forthabbhuggato:
indeed‘itipi thatso Blessed Onebhagavā perfectedarahaṁ fully awakened Buddhasammāsambuddho accomplished in knowledge and conductvijjācaraṇasampanno holysugato knower of the worldlokavidū supremeanuttaro guide for those fit for trainingpurisadammasārathi teachersatthā of gods and humansdevamanussānaṁ awakenedbuddho blessedbhagavā’ti.

manyBahū forhi of thattassa worthybhoto Gotamagotamassa astute aristocrats tookhattiyapaṇḍitāpi astute brahmins toobrāhmaṇapaṇḍitāpi astute householders toogahapatipaṇḍitāpi astute ascetics toosamaṇapaṇḍitāpi devotedabhippasannā guidedvinītā nobleariye systemñāye teachingdhamme skillfulkusale”ti.
face to face“Sammukhā even ifcepi wemayaṁ, worthybho Bhāradvājabhāradvāja, thattaṁ worthybhavantaṁ Gotamagotamaṁ we might seepasseyyāma, face to face toosammukhāpi to himnaṁ we would sayvadeyyāma:
baby-killer‘bhūnahu asceticsamaṇo Gotamagotamo’ti.
thatTaṁ whatkissa reasonhetu?
so indeedEvañhi to usno while sleepingsutte it cameocaratī”ti.
if“Sace thattaṁ worthybhoto Māgaṇḍiyamāgaṇḍiyassa not burdensomeagaru I may tellāroceyyāmi thattaṁ asceticsamaṇassa Gotamagotamassā”ti.
unconcerned“Appossukko worthybhavaṁ Bhāradvājabhāradvājo exactly as saidvuttova to himnaṁ you may sayvadeyyā”ti.

thenAtha indeedkho the Blessed Onebhagavā in the eveningsāyanhasamayaṁ from retreatpaṭisallānā arisenvuṭṭhito to whereyena of the Bhāradvāja clanbhāradvājagottassa of the brahminbrāhmaṇassa fire chamberagyāgāraṁ he approachedtenupasaṅkami; having approachedupasaṅkamitvā sat downnisīdi the Blessed Onebhagavā on the preparedpaññatte grass mattiṇasanthārake.
thenAtha indeedkho the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clanbhāradvājagotto brahminbrāhmaṇo to whereyena the Blessed Onebhagavā he approachedtenupasaṅkami; having approachedupasaṅkamitvā with the Blessed Onebhagavatā together withsaddhiṁ exchanged greetingssammodi.
cordialSammodanīyaṁ conversationkathaṁ politesāraṇīyaṁ having exchangedvītisāretvā to one sideekamantaṁ sat downnisīdi. to one sideEkamantaṁ seatednisinnaṁ indeedkho the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clanbhāradvājagottaṁ brahminbrāhmaṇaṁ the Blessed Onebhagavā said thisetadavoca:
was there“ahu praypana for youte, Bhāradvājabhāradvāja, with Māgaṇḍiyamāgaṇḍiyena with the wandererparibbājakena together withsaddhiṁ this veryimaṁyeva grass mattiṇasanthārakaṁ aboutārabbha somekocideva discussionkathāsallāpo”ti?
thusEvaṁ saidvutte, the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clanbhāradvājagotto brahminbrāhmaṇo shockedsaṁviggo awestrucklomahaṭṭhajāto to the Blessed Onebhagavantaṁ said thisetadavoca:
this very thing“etadeva indeedkho praypana wemayaṁ of the worthy onebhoto of Gotamagotamassa wishing to reportārocetukāmā.
butAtha andca praypana worthybhavaṁ Gotamagotamo the very unmentionedanakkhātaṁyeva you brought upakkhāsī”ti.

and thisAyañca indeedhi of the Blessed Onebhagavato with Bhāradvāja-clansmanbhāradvājagottena with the brahminbrāhmaṇena together withsaddhiṁ intervening talkantarākathā left unfinishedvippakatā ishoti.
thenAtha indeedkho Māgaṇḍiyamāgaṇḍiyo the wandererparibbājako walking for exercisejaṅghāvihāraṁ walking up and downanucaṅkamamāno wandering aboutanuvicaramāno whereyena of the Bhāradvāja-clansmanbhāradvājagottassa of the brahminbrāhmaṇassa fire chamberagyāgāraṁ whereyena the Blessed Onebhagavā he approached himtenupasaṅkami; having approachedupasaṅkamitvā with the Blessed Onebhagavatā together withsaddhiṁ he exchanged greetingssammodi.
greetingSammodanīyaṁ talkkathaṁ polite conversationsāraṇīyaṁ having exchangedvītisāretvā to one sideekamantaṁ he sat downnisīdi. to one sideEkamantaṁ seatednisinnaṁ indeedkho Māgaṇḍiyamāgaṇḍiyaṁ the wandererparibbājakaṁ the Blessed Onebhagavā this he saidetadavoca:

thatTaṁ by the Realized Onetathāgatassa tameddantaṁ guardedguttaṁ protectedrakkhitaṁ restrainedsaṁvutaṁ, for itstassa andca for restraintsaṁvarāya Dhammadhammaṁ he teachesdeseti.
thisIdaṁ thennu yourte thisetaṁ, Māgaṇḍiyamāgaṇḍiya, referring tosandhāya spokenbhāsitaṁ:
baby-killer‘bhūnahu reclusesamaṇo Gotamagotamo’”ti?
